What’s in a Name? The Evolution of a National Celebration
Names may change, but the spirit of a celebration remains timeless. Much like how a knafeh chocolate retains its sweetness regardless of its name, the UAE’s annual commemoration on December 2 has evolved in its title while holding steadfast to its essence.

Originally known as UAE National Day, this public holiday marks the founding of the UAE in 1971, when the emirates united as an independent nation. It’s a time for gratitude, reflection, and celebration—a tribute to the UAE’s enduring values of tolerance, hospitality, strength, generosity, and unity.

From National Day to Eid Al Etihad
In 2023, the UAE’s 52nd anniversary was rebranded as UAE Union Day, emphasizing the foundational value of unity among the emirates. This shift highlighted the spirit of the union that binds the nation together.

By 2024, the celebration took on its most authentic form yet—Eid Al Etihad, an Arabic term meaning Festival of the Union. The new name captures the day’s essence and serves as a rallying call to wave the UAE flag with pride.

What Does Eid Al Etihad Mean for UAE Residents?

Eid Al Etihad is more than just a public holiday. It’s a moment to reflect on the UAE’s journey, celebrate its diversity, and honor the unity that underpins its success.

Here’s what to expect during the 53rd anniversary celebrations in 2024:

  • A Four-Day Weekend:
The UAE Cabinet has declared December 2 and 3 (Monday and Tuesday) as public holidays for both public and private sectors. For those with weekends off, this means a luxurious four-day break.

  • Spectacular Fireworks:
Dubai will host dazzling fireworks displays at iconic locations, including:

    • JBR Beach
    • Al Seef
    • Hatta
    • Dubai Festival City Mall (paired with the IMAGINE light and laser show)

Global Village will also feature nightly fireworks at 9 PM from November 29 to December 3, adding to the festive spirit.

  • Eid Al Etihad Zones:
New for 2024, special Eid Al Etihad Zones will be set up across all seven emirates, offering unique experiences and celebrations. Details on locations and activities will be announced soon.

Looking Ahead: Eid Al Etihad 2025
The celebration of the UAE’s 54th anniversary in 2025 will include another two-day public holiday on December 2 and 3 (Tuesday and Wednesday). It’s a continued reminder of the unity and vision that define the UAE.
